Prequels

Avoid referencing future events, characters, key terms, and plot elements that are only introduced at a later time in the sequel(s).

(Fictional) Examples

  1. Prior to the events in Jujutsu Kaisen, 16-year-old Yuuta Okkotsu, a timid victim of high school bullying, frequently faced violent misfortunes.

  2. Before Subaru was transported to the Kingdom of Lugnica in another world, time stood still in Elior Forest, home to dangerous magical beasts and 50 elves frozen in ice.

The first example uses generic phrasing to refer to the sequel, which only serves to indicate the chronological order. The second example introduces a detail that occurs in the sequel, but it has no relation to the prequel.

As with sequel synopses, strive to create the introduction of your prequel synopsis in different innovative ways.

Examples

  1. Hated by everyone around him, Sei Handa goes about his high school life regarded as an outcast—or at least that is what he believes. (Handa-kun)

    • Sei Handa is introduced as a high school student in Handa-kun and has no mention of him being a calligrapher as he is in Barakamon.

  2. In Japan, there exists a government agency known as the Supernatural Disaster Countermeasures Division (SDCD), whose duty is to protect the citizens from creatures unseen. (Ga-Rei: Zero)

    • Focuses primarily on the SDCD and the two main characters involved.
