Content Differences

This encompasses attitude, plot, and addition or removal of segments. It is preferred that you watch/read the original version when writing your synopsis.

Examples

Alteration of original script

• Gakkou no Kaidan

  • The English team (ADV) was not given a translation for the series' script, and thus they made up words in sync with the characters' lip movements regardless of content accuracy.

• Windaria

  • The intentions and motivation of the main character have been changed. Additionally, the backstory of a supporting character has been completely modified.

Additions

• Battle Royale

  • Tokyopop's translation made "The Program" a reality TV show that was broadcasted to the world. This is not mentioned in the original Japanese release.

• Windaria

  • Added narration in the introduction and the ending of the movie, but also during other moments of the story as well.

Removal of scenes containing violence, nudity, or sexual references

• Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z

  • Various edits made to address these aspects led to significant changes in dialogue and scenes, some of which have been omitted entirely. The Dragon Ball Fandom has a list keeping track of the censorship.

• One Piece

  • Similar to Dragon Ball; here is a video covering censorship of one arc.
