Information

Use mathematical and other special symbols in synopses only if you must (for example, if one appears in the title).

Examples

Symbols in place of words

Unless specified otherwise elsewhere in the Style Guide, do not replace words with symbols. For example, do not use a slash (/) to represent the words or or per. Similarly, write out the word percent rather than using the percent symbol (%).

Examples

  • Correct: kilometers per hour, 50 percent

  • Incorrect: kilometers/hour, 50%
