# Symbols

## Information

Use mathematical and other special symbols in synopses only if you must (for example, if one appears in the title).

## Symbols in place of words

Unless specified otherwise elsewhere in the Style Guide, do not replace words with symbols. For example, do not use a slash (/) to represent the words *or* or *per*. Similarly, write out the word *percent* rather than using the percent symbol (%).

### Examples

* Correct: kilometers per hour, 50 percent
* Incorrect: kilometers/hour, 50%
