FAQ

These are some common questions and answers to them based on the previous sections. For any additional inquiries or concerns, contact KTGita22 through MAL or Discord.

Q1: I want to add/edit the current background info, but the entry's final edit has already been reviewed by a coordinator. What do I do?

A: If the entry in question has not been published on the MAL website (i.e. the background information has not been uploaded), you can follow the standard procedure and reach out to the coordinator who reviewed the Google Docs document to notify them about the changes.

If it has been published, you can make a post on the anime-fixes and manga-fixes MAL Rewrite Discord forum channels to report errors. If you are not in the MAL Rewrite Discord server, you may instead contact KTGita22 directly.

For published background information not written by Rewrite (the information is not included on the entry's Google Docs document), you must use the Edit function, which appears to the right of the Background title on a MAL entry. Note that while this alternate review process does not involve the Rewrite club, you should follow our guidelines to maintain consistency.

Q2: What about during the editing process?

A: You are able to go back and add and/or edit the background information even after you have completed your respective part as an editor or writer. However, this does not mean that you are allowed to make modifications to the synopsis once you have handed the synopsis off to the next member.

Q3: I cannot find the information I want to add in the common phrasings. What should I do?

A: The templates are the recommended structure you should strive to establish in your background information, but understandably not all information you need to fill in the gaps will always be available. Think of the common phrasings as guidance rather than restrictions; make use of them as much as you can, and then adjust them based on the circumstances. If you are uncertain about what you have written, you can comment about your concerns in the Google Doc and have editors/the overseeing coordinator review it, or reach out to KTGita22 through MAL or Discord for them to evaluate the material.

Q4: There is no template for the information I want to include. How should I approach this?

A: Do your best to present the information in a concise manner, preferably beginning the sentence with the entry's title (for example, Non Non Biyori), "the series," or "the anime/manga."

Q5: What makes a source reliable, and when should I include it in my list of references?

A: At a glance, it can be easy to differentiate trustworthy websites from sketchy ones. But even then, there can still be misleading/inaccurate information. The best way to make sure a source is reliable is two things: the website lists the sources it referenced, and the information stated there can be cross-referenced with another website (preferably the original Japanese source), where the details in question match each other. If it passes these two checks, you can include the website in your list of sources.

A: No related entries (such as sequels, prequels, related specials/OVAs, spinoffs, etc.) should be mentioned in the section unless there is a noteworthy reason to do so. In other words, titles that have an existing MAL database entry or are valid to receive one cannot be included in the background information. For the former, you can verify this by visiting the Related section on any database entry; for the latter, please consult the Anime Guidelines and Manga Guidelines for further reference. Notable examples are listed below:

Furthermore, note that this rule extends to aspects that can already be found on the entry's own page.

Q7: According to the General Guidelines in the Basics section, I am supposed to limit the background information to three paragraphs for conciseness and readability. How do I determine what information to keep for entries when I have an abundant amount of eligible material (ex: multiple types of information, multiple adaptations, multiple international licenses for manga, etc.)?

A: Start with the explanations in the Anime and Manga sections. There, you will find specifications about what information to prioritize. Additionally, try to find ways to condense your information. It is acceptable to trim the wording of a relevant template if it improves readability. Some templates in the Anime and Manga sections already indicate optional information in green. For multiple adaptations, you may omit the publishers, release dates, or titles. Likewise, for manga international licenses, you can skip the titles in other languages, the release dates, or even the publishers if required. Notable examples are listed below:

Q8: How do I determine accurate information when I cannot find it in the official sources and when other reliable sources are inconsistent?

A: Never include details that you cannot confirm consistently across multiple sources. If part of the information is consistent, use only the consistent part and leave out the rest. For instance, if only the month and year are consistent in a release date, use only the month and year. If only the year is consistent, use only the year. This way, it is easier to avoid inaccuracy or false information.
